Questions
Recuperative care (also known as medical respite care) is a short-term, supportive service that provides a safe place for people experiencing homelessness to recover after a hospital stay or medical treatment. It bridges the gap between hospital discharge and stable housing by offering both medical oversight and social support.
Recuperative care is needed because many people experiencing homelessness have no safe or stable place to heal after being discharged from the hospital. Without proper rest, hygiene, and follow-up care, their health often worsens—leading to repeated hospital visits and higher medical costs.
Recuperative care provides a stable environment where individuals can recover physically and emotionally while receiving support to address housing, income, and other social needs. It helps break the cycle of illness and homelessness by promoting long-term stability and improved well-being.
Most clients in recuperative care do not pay out of pocket. Funding usually comes from partnerships between hospitals, health plans, local governments, or nonprofit organizations.
Hospitals may cover the cost as part of discharge planning, while Medicaid or managed care organizations may fund recuperative care for eligible individuals. Some programs also receive grants or charitable donations to support uninsured or undocumented clients.
The goal is to ensure that no one is denied care due to lack of money
It addresses the whole person—medical, social, and emotional needs—through supervised recovery, case management, and access to housing and mental health resources.
